Original Contract Value: ~ CA$33.4M
The work includes the construction of the Contract A506 – Gravity Thickener Expansion, which is principally:
- Two (2) additional circular gravity thickeners
- Two (2) pumping station buildings, one for each new gravity thickener. Pump station buildings are two-storey buildings, including a pump room on the ground floor and an electrical room on the second floor.
- Modifications to existing solids contact tanks 1 and 2, including deep channel tie-ins and isolations, installation of slide gates and stop logs, and deep channel aeration diffusers.
- Associated piping, valves, electrical, and controls for the above.

Investing in Our Region’s Future
A vital project to enhance wastewater treatment for a growing population.
Project Overview
The Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located in Delta, BC, is one of the largest secondary treatment plants in Metro Vancouver. To serve our growing population and protect the Fraser River, the plant is undergoing a significant expansion known as Stage 5.
A key component of this expansion is the A506 Contract – Gravity Thickener Expansion. This project focuses on increasing the plant’s capacity to handle solids, a crucial step in the wastewater treatment process. By improving our solids handling, we can ensure the plant operates efficiently and continues to meet stringent environmental standards.
Project Goals
- Increase Treatment Capacity: To accommodate the needs of a growing population in the 14 municipalities served by the plant.
- Enhance Solids Treatment: Improve the efficiency of the solids thickening process, a critical step in wastewater treatment.
- Protect the Environment: Ensure that the treated wastewater released into the Fraser River continues to meet or exceed all regulatory requirements.
- Improve System Reliability: Upgrade and expand infrastructure to ensure the plant operates reliably for decades to come.
Key Features of the Gravity Thickener Expansion
- Two New Gravity Thickeners: Construction of two large, circular tanks that use gravity to separate solids from water.
- New Pumping Stations: Two-storey pump stations will be built to support the new thickeners, housing pumps and electrical equipment.
- Infrastructure Modifications: Upgrades to existing solids contact tanks and associated piping to integrate the new facilities.
- Odour Control Systems: New and modified systems to minimize odour from the treatment process.
- Electrical and Control System Upgrades: Significant expansion of the plant’s electrical distribution and control systems to manage the new equipment.
Benefits to the Community
- A Healthier Environment
Ensures the continued protection of the Fraser River’s aquatic ecosystem. - Sustainable Growth
Provides the necessary infrastructure to support a growing regional population and economy. - Reliable Service
Strengthens the resilience of our wastewater system for reliable, long-term operation.
