Project Background
The Surrey Langley SkyTrain is the first major rapid transit extension South of the Fraser River in over 30 years. It extends the existing Expo Line by 16 kilometres, running primarily along the Fraser Highway.
Originally, the region considered a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. However, in 2018, plans shifted to SkyTrain technology to better integrate with the existing Metro Vancouver network, offering higher speeds and separated tracks that don’t interfere with road traffic.
This project is vital for managing population growth. By 2050, the area is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of new residents and jobs. The SkyTrain ensures sustainable growth by connecting affordable housing, education, and employment centers.

Benefits to Society
- Greener Future – Expected to reduce vehicle travel by thousands of kilometres daily, lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
- Housing & Jobs – Supports “Transit-Oriented Development,” creating affordable housing and job hubs near stations.
- Economic Growth – Creates full-time jobs during construction and improves regional business access post-completion.
- Accessibility – Provides accessible, rapid transit options for seniors, students, and those without vehicles.
